The Pursuit of Civic Engagement and a Culture
of Sustainability: A Workshop with Douglas Worts
Wednesday, February 11, 2004, 3:00PM –
6:30PM
JFKU Berkeley Campus - Department of Museum Studies (formerly JFKU
Arts Annex)
Commonly, museums are simply in search of sustaining themselves - and
usually this means economically…If the pursuit of a 'culture of
sustainability' is not considered the main goal of cultural organizations,
then all of our civic engagement work (however much or little we are
successful at this) will be basically rearranging deckchairs on the
Titanic. In order to address sustainability, it is essential to discuss
such things as global carrying capacity, limits to growth, and the role
of human consciousness in a globalized world.
– Douglas Worts
Museums are increasingly interested in community engagement and measuring
program effectiveness. Cultural Connections and JFKU’s Department
of Museum Studies are pleased to offer this expert-led and participatory
workshop.
Douglas Worts will address such questions as:
- What is civic engagement?
- What qualitative and quantitative measures and indicators will enable
museums to understand community needs and assess program impacts?
- What is sustainability?
- How does a larger view of sustainability—from global carrying
capacity, limits to growth, and the role of human consciousness in a
globalized world—affect museums?
