Let Them Be Heard: Visitor Participation in the Museum Experience
Tuesday, December 2, 2008 2:00 - 5:45 PM; Networking event 6:00 - 8:00 PM
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

Join four museum professionals as they share insights into ways visitors to exhibitions can not only participate in but also contribute to the museum experience. Stephanie Pau will share SFMOMA's cross-departmental efforts to promote visitor participation and inquiry during the exhibition The Art of Participation: 1950 to Now, a survey of participatory artworks from Fluxus to present.

Chris Alexander will discuss a recent project produced by the San Jose Museum of Art. Utilizing YouTube, the Museum not only promoted its current exhibition Road Trip but also solicited global participation with video. Chris will speak about creating and launching the video and the visitor response.

Catherine King will present the International Museum of Women's experiences engaging a diverse global audience in the current online exhibition Women, Power and Politics. The exhibition (open through December 31, 2008) combines museum curated exhibition content, related visitor-submitted stories and an online community.

Finally, co-editor Kathleen McLean will discuss her book Visitor Voices in Museum Exhibitions, which includes case studies and reflections on visitor contributions, co-expression, and creations in museum exhibitions over the last thirty years.
